What it is

What is a dental crown, and how does it work?

A dental crown is a custom porcelain cap that covers an entire tooth, replacing outer structure lost to decay, a large filling, a crack or heavy wear. It restores the tooth's strength and its shape at once. ANEWU's Buckhead team shades each crown to match the teeth beside it.

If you have ever wondered why a dentist would cover a whole tooth instead of patching it again, the reason is structural. Once enough of the outer tooth is gone, no healthy wall is left to hold a repair. That is why crowns belong to our cosmetic dentistry services, and why the porcelain is shaded to read as a natural tooth rather than a visible cap.

Is this you?

Am I a candidate for a dental crown?

You are likely a candidate for a crown if a tooth is cracked, heavily filled, worn down, or has been treated with a root canal and now needs long term protection. Teeth that are structurally sound but only look imperfect are usually better served by a thinner cosmetic option.

  • A large filling has cracked or come loose
  • A tooth has a visible crack or fracture line
  • A tooth is worn down and has lost its shape
  • A root canal has left the tooth needing protection
  • An older crown has failed or no longer matches

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown. Our cosmetic dentistry team will confirm at your free consultation which your tooth actually needs. Results vary from patient to patient.

How we plan it

Planned before it is placed.

Digital imaging lets our team see the tooth underneath before anything is reshaped, so decay, cracks and bite pressure are planned for rather than discovered halfway through.

Imaging helps plan the crown and check the tooth underneath before treatment begins.

Your visit

What happens when you get a crown, step by step?

A crown is usually completed over two visits. At the first, the tooth is examined and reshaped, an impression or digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown is placed. The permanent crown is then made to match your shade, checked for fit and bite, and bonded in place.

Two visits is typical, though a tooth needing more groundwork can take longer. If this is your first time with us, here is what to expect at your first visit.

  1. 01

    Exam and digital imaging

Your tooth is examined, usually with digital imaging, to confirm a crown is the right fix and to check for hidden decay.

  2. 02

    Preparation and a temporary crown

The tooth is numbed and reshaped, an impression or scan is taken, and you leave with a temporary crown in place.

  3. 03

    Custom fabrication

Your permanent crown is made to the shade and shape recorded at that visit, so it matches the teeth beside it.

  4. 04

    Final fit and bonding

At the second visit the fit, the margin and the bite are checked, then the crown is bonded and polished.

Crown or veneer

Crown or veneer: which one does my tooth need?

A crown is needed when the tooth itself is weakened, because it wraps and holds the whole tooth together. A veneer covers only the front surface and suits a healthy tooth with a cosmetic flaw. ANEWU's cosmetic dentistry team confirms which one your tooth needs before any preparation begins.

If you have ever wondered why two people with similar front teeth end up with different treatments, this is why. Porcelain veneers change the surface of a tooth that is already strong. A crown is what you need once the tooth itself has lost structure.

Healthy tooth, cosmetic concern only? A veneer is usually the lighter option.

Who provides it

Planned and fitted by our cosmetic dentistry team.

Crowns at ANEWU are planned, prepared and fitted by our cosmetic dentistry team, in the same Georgia offices where full arch work stays in house with an on site lab. We do not run a general dental practice, so a crown here is planned as part of a cosmetic treatment plan rather than squeezed into a routine appointment.

Lifespan and care

How long do dental crowns last?

Porcelain crowns commonly last 10 to 15 years, and often longer with good hygiene and regular checkups. What shortens that span is usually the tooth underneath rather than the porcelain itself, so decay at the crown margin and grinding are the two things worth guarding against.

The difference between a crown that lasts twenty years and one that fails in six is usually the margin where porcelain meets tooth. Keep that line clean and the crown tends to outlive the estimate.

  • Floss the margin where the crown meets the gum
  • Keep up with regular checkups wherever you have them
  • Tell us if you clench or grind at night
  • Skip ice and hard candy, as you would with a natural tooth
Cost and financing

How much does a dental crown cost in Atlanta?

Crown cost depends on the condition of the tooth, how much preparation it needs, and the material chosen for the restoration. Dental insurance sometimes contributes when a crown is medically necessary and usually does not for cosmetic only cases. ANEWU accepts CareCredit and Proceed Finance at all three Georgia offices, plus Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

We do not quote a crown before seeing the tooth, because a cracked molar and a worn front tooth need different preparation. You can review financing options before your visit.

Your questions, answered.

These are the questions we hear most often about crowns.

Ask us directly

Yes. Porcelain crowns are shaded and shaped to match the teeth around them, so a well-made crown on a front tooth is difficult to spot.

The tooth is numbed before it's reshaped, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity in the days after is normal and typically fades quickly.

Not always. A crown is sometimes placed on a tooth with a healthy nerve, simply to protect it from further cracking. Your treatment plan depends on the condition of the tooth.

No. Porcelain doesn't change shade the way natural enamel does, so the crown's color is fixed at the time it's made. If you're planning to whiten your natural teeth, do it before your crown shade is selected so everything matches.
